Are you stuck with Canon VS Nikon

Well, many of us goes with a hard time when buying the first camera...
Specially when it is about buying your first DSLR camera...You know that your DSLR will be a big and long term investment, with a need to purchase bundle of lens time to time..Thus everyone wishes to go for the best deal available in the market...

However, with the increase in competition in the market there are many brands offering excellent DSLRs.. And I know most of us get stuck with the question - Which Brand to go for ???

Currently most popular brands offering DSLR are  -  Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic, Fujifilm, Sigma...Excuse me if I missed any,,,
Thus here the problem starts with sorting of the brands..
However my main concentration here will be resolve the query of Canon or Nikon...

Know coming the solution -

Short listing - Firstly rule out the brands you thing not suitable at all for your purchase..
This can be done by considering the quality of product, availability, getting lenses etc...
Thus if I talk about ruling out among the listed ones, with considering the Indian market I will immediately cut off Sigma, Panasonic and Fujifilm... Just because of no/ least availability of their DSLR in India...

Ruining the lower ones - Now from here things go hard... U need to remove the lower ones from your list... By lower, I mean lower in priority...
For example, Sony and Pentax have a small range of DSLR and the lenses..But they are not at all the bad ones...Olympus have many problems due to small sensor, and again due to less availability..
No, doubt Canon and Nikon are way ahead from these three because of better products, great range of lenses, easy availability than those three and easy after sale services too.

But this does not mean that you should kick those three out of your list immediately...
  •  If you have a good count of Minolta lenses which could work with Sony, it will be the best decision to go for Sony... Sony is growing continuously and wont be disappointing you as the time goes forward...
  • Similarly, if you was a Pentax user in the film arena, a Pentax could be the ultimate choice...They are expanding quickly, but had not yet released a Full Frame DSLR till now...
  • Olympus has it own fans, I dont have much to speak about them...
Again, if I would had been there to shortlist, I would had removed Sony, Pentax and Olympus..Coz I neither have old Minolta or Pentax lens, nor I and oly fan..Thus what remains is Canon and Nikon...

Coming on to main Issue - Canon vs Nikon

If  you had decided O/P/S you can stop here....But I know most of you would be reading down just to read the Canon VS Nikon war...
Both Canon and Nikon are the rulers on DSLR market, and creating the best camera and lenses...
Thus you cannot simply ruin of any one of them and go for the other...
So, before you read down, I request you to pen down your Field of Interest on the Photography .. You will be getting the answer of writing the interests soon...I am sure all of your are more inclined towards one specific field than other.. If not, I doubt you need a DSLR...
Now if you had done go for further reading....

Canon -
Canon is creating excellent Series of Cameras and Lenses at present, with DSLRs for people of all field of interest...However the turning point comes, when you talk about the lenses...
Canon had a huge variety of lenses, made for every one,...the range is more than that of Nikon, and are cheaper than the Nikon ones...In some telephoto lenses price difference is very large...
You get quite a lot options in Canon if you want to buy a telephoto lens, with variations as per your budget...
Some classic lens are also there in Canon's list giving you soft focus portrait lens, MP-E 65mm 1-5x  macro lens etc...
Also, canon DSLR have an edge over Nikon, when you need DSLR for sports and wildlife..The 1D series could perfectly define it...
However, ISO and noise performance is not that good for canon in compare to Nikon...

Nikon -
No doubt Nikon is also at equal competition with Canon, with beautifully designed cameras...
At present, with those D90, D5000 and D3s cameras at market, Nikon rule over the Canon in case of  ISO, noise and low light performance...Nikon had proved himself the be better performer in case of low light problem...
Nikon also had a excellent series of lenses for all users, however smaller than Canon... Also the telephoto range is extremely limited and overpriced in comparison to Canon..
Moreover, the absence of auto focus motor on the body in entry level Range is issue, due to no auto focus by non AF-S lens...
But these issues are simple over ruled, if a buyer need a low light performance, with a general range of lens....

So Which one to get - Canon or Nikon..

Now this decision is completely upon you...
Here comes the use of the list I requested you to make about your field of interest in the Photography..
Both Canon and Nikon had great features, but the place where edges do not match had been listed by me above...
  • If you are very much in Wildlife, Bird, Sports, [bit in portrait too] Photography, Canon is your ultimate choice... Because of the huge variety of tele lens and some fast cameras they have...
  • If you are engrossed  in Indoor, Portraits, Wedding Photography, or where you need a good low light performance, Nikon is the better decision.
  • Those fields which are skipped, like landscape, macro etc, are well done by both of them... No need to worry.!!
So, no need to hit the head on wall for deciding Canon or Nikon... Just buy any one of them as per your needs...

Have a Happy Purchase!!

Note -
This article is written as per the current market and product situation of the various brands...
One cant tell what will be the status of any brand after 3-4 years...So plz remember all the statics show the current situation of them...

Hi! Good job and a well written post. I am not going to comment on your Nikon vs Canon thing as you already believe me to have a strong Nikon bias. However, your entry level rant about Nikon is a bit off the mark. Although I also am not very impressed with the absence of the AF motor in Nikon Entry level bodies, you have to realize that most entry level users don't use it. Of the existing lenses, Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is probably the only lens that such a user will miss out, which again is likely to upgraded with a motor rather soon. Every other pro lens requires a mid level body to match up the MTF levels. And yes, before I call off, the AF and the Ergonomics of the entry level Nikons are way above the Canons which, to put it simply, are downright plasticky, boxy and a horror to hold!

Keep it up, pal!

Thank you Uma ji for you views..
I tried my best to be unbiased..

I agree you about the AF motor in the body part..
and most of the lens are do getting motor in them now...

but what about some of the jewel lenses like 85mm f/1.8.?? There is no sign from Nikon in upgrading them to AF-S..
and they are now making the mid level DSLRs motorless too.. strong rumors of Nikon D90 upgrade to have no AF motor in body...

Same could be there with D700 upgrade...
here the issue arise, since most of the higher end body users do have old lenses..

However, its responsibility of Nikon to make lenses AF-S sooner.. bodys cannot be skipped for this..

Also, Apologies for not mentioning good ergonomics of entry level nikon over canon..
My Bad!!! :(
